I love the new Droid ad, especially if it pisses off iPhone fans (like this lady right here).

I disagree completely with her, This *will* strike the core of all the geeks (yes! women geek included) and they will buy this phone!!! brilliant if you ask me. They are appealing to the very market segment that Apple is not (seriously people, aren’t iPhone ads the queerest around? they make you want to wear turtle necks or feather scarfs).

Anyways, the geek populous is a great market, they have a great buying power (most geeks have two or more phones) and they influence a lot of people on their buying decisions (don’t you turn to your geek friends for gadget advice?) so I do think they will succeed with their ad campaign, but only time with tell…

As much as I’d love to be a trend setter (who wouldn’t?), I’m merely just following the trend of many, many Windows Mobile users that have jumped ship either to iPhone (the more “consumer-oriented” portion), but mostly the Android (mostly ”the geekiest” portion). It is sad, but things like the one that happened at PDC09 where Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s “Chief Software Architect”, said that the mobile apps are not an important strategy clearly shows that Microsoft has no clue of how the mobile space is working right now, and Gartner’s latest research shows people is not tolerating that… only time will tell. When I finally decided that I was switching to Android, I was trying to decide between getting the Samsung Moment and The HTC Hero.

I spent quite a few days playing with one of my co-worker’s Hero for a few days and finally after a while I was convinced that this was the phone I wanted, but then I went to a Sprint store that day and held the Samsung Moment and the HTC Hero side by side and compared most features, and finally I liked the Moment a lot better than the Hero so I ended up buying it. But guess what?? I’m loving it!!!! 

The screen is brighter on the Samsung Moment and the colors look more vivid compared to the HTC Hero, my wife immediately noticed it without me even opening my mouth, THE AMOLED SCREEN IS BETTER, is a fact of nature no HTC fan boy can deny (I know they will though).

Senese UI is better than vanilla Android no doubt about it but for me it reminded me a lot of TouchFLO 3D and being a frustrated Windows Mobile user that came running to Android I really don’t want that painful memory on my phone. (I do realize they are separated things but hey!! I got issues)

Keyboard is important for me, the dust issue on the Hero’s “gap” between the screen and the bottom panel is also a factor and finally there’s a bit of barley noticeable speed difference but I’m sure it will disappear once you have installed apps and loaded contacts etc.

Two places where the Moment is faster: Boot up time and camera app the rest is barley unnoticeable. but I have to admit Sense UI does feel a little bloated, two separated Hero owners have complimeneted the speed of my phone without me saying anything!!!

After making my evaluation I made my purchasing decision and spent all night playing with the phone and I’m very, very satisfied. Is not for everyone and if you’re more of an iPhone kind of guy I guess the HTC Hero is a better choice for you.

I also expect vanilla Android phones (or Google Experience I should say) like the Samsung Moment and the Motorola Droid to get updates faster like the G1 that is already rocking Android 1.6.

As I blogged recently I ditched mi Windows Mobile phone and moved to a new Samsung Moment (on the Now Network ) so I wanted to save some time for folks like me that are making the switch (about 33% of WM users according to this article) and help them get up and running fast on their new Android phones.

First things first, you need a GMail account, you probably already have one (or many) but if you don’t hurry up and open it…

Next you’ll have to connect your Windows Mobile phone to Google Sync using ActiveSync. This a fairly simple task and all you have to do is follow the very easy instructions detailed here.

When you’re done your Windows Mobile Phone will erroneously tell you that you’re connected to a Microsoft Exchange server, but don’t worry, you did everything right, is just that your Windows Phone can’t tell the difference (LOL ).

Your Phone is now backing up all your contacts, appointments and tasks into your GMail account. You can even navigate to GMail on your PC and click on the contacts link and you’ll see all your contacts there or go to your Google Calendar and check the appointments you had on your phone.

When ActiveSync tells you that the sync is finished, then that is when the fun begins, you can kiss your Windows Mobile device good-bye (sorry Microsoft but you saw that coming and decided not to do anything about it) and then turn on your beautiful Android device!!!!

In the Android device you simply open the GMail application, type in your GMail credentials and out-of-the-box your Android device will sync all your GMail contacts to your device including the ones you had in your Windows Mobile phone (you did bought an unlimited data plan with this, did you?). 

When you see your recent GMail messages, you can now get back to the Android home (by pushing on the home button) and click on the contacts application to check all your contacts. 

One last thing, if you’re like me and have a gazillion contacts in your GMail account and only care about the contacts you had on your windows mobile device, simply click on “menu” inside the contacts app and select the “edit sync groups” option and then unselect all options and leave only “My Contacts” group selected. this will only sync the contacts you had on your old Windows Mobile phone.

FINALLY!!! I got my Android device today. After a lot of research I finally went for the Samsung Moment.
Yeah, yeah you might think I’m insane getting this phone the day of the “Droid” launch, but I like Sprint better so I went for Droid’s little brother, as a matter of fact I’m typing this post from the Moment’s awesome keyboard and let me tell you it beats the hell out of the Droid’s keyboard.

Yup, you got it right, this ain’t a Windows Mobile blog no more!!!

It’s been two good years devoted to Windows Mobile and I’ve got over 100.000 hits on this blog on the course of this time which I think is a great number but now that I’m getting back to blogging I consider that the mobile space has changed and opened so much I feel Windows Mobile is just a mere part of it and sadly is fading into the distance.

I’m even considering getting a different phone, probably an Android phone in the coming month so that is also an important factor of my decision to change this blog into Yet Another Mobile Blog (YAMB).

Hope you enjoy the new direction, I’m hoping to have a ton of fun again with it and I hope to keep counting with you as a reader.

Windows Mobile 6.5

It’s finally here!!!!! despite the endless chain of leaks that at first I didn’t even credited (specially the screen shots), it has finally been announced.

I have to admit that the leaks helped built up all the excitment and maybe remove a little bit of the suspense  — but for what it’s worth, Windows Mobile 6.5 is now official.

UPDATE 01/26/2009: The new version of Internet Explorer RC1 has officially been released today and it’s open for the general public, you can download it here. This version’s build is 8.0.6001.18372 

I’m rocking this baby since yesterday

It’s the technical beta for the upcoming Internet Explorer 8 RC1, I’m using both the XP version at home and the Vista version here at work, so far I’m liking the Vista version better, but they are both a giant leap for webkind (jejeje)

New IE8 Build Available for Tech Beta Participants:

We are releasing the IE8 Partner Build to the IE8 Technical Beta for you to help us test and find issues. This build represents a preview of our progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While we believe it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but only for testing purposes.

Instructions to download the IE8 Partner Build:
1) Click on Downloads
2) Click on “IE8 Partner Build” for your version of Windows.
3) Read the Install Guidelines
4) Click on “Download” at the bottom of the page.

Bugs in the IE8 Technical beta will be resolved according to functionality in the IE8 Partner build, just like in our transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you feel that we have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug. Instructions on how to do this are below.

As we get closer to shipping IE8, we are looking for the most impactful bugs to fix. Please continue to file bugs and of course keep rating! Keep up the great work!
